How mobility is changing businesses

Mobility 4Depending on their sector, most businesses consider desktops an integral part of their workforce. But with an increase in smart device usage and mobile technology, there has been a huge shift in the last five years towards a more mobile workplace. It’s been one of the most significant transformations to traditional working environments, especially with employees now able to meet their responsibilities just as easily (and sometimes easier) outside the office as they can when they’re in. From flexibility to scalability, there are countless ways in which the mobility movement is still changing businesses. Here are some of the biggest aspects of businesses that are evolving:

Constant Connection

The world is now the most connected that it’s ever been thanks to advances in the digital landscape being paired with the mobility of smart devices. Smart device ownership means workers have the means to stay connected at all times, forming a new culture of reachability no matter the time or place. It’s enabled many workers to have complete flexibility with working hours and work spaces which has been hugely positive for businesses when it comes to employee morale and productivity, but it’s also encouraged the growth of working hours which can be seen as a negative by employees. Where other technological trends fade, the connectivity of the mobile world is a universal development that’s becoming the norm.

Up in the Clouds

A lot of businesses are shedding old IT infrastructures in favour of the cloud. Clunky physical servers that drain resources and take up space are fast becoming a thing of the past. Cloud providers can offer connectivity for the growing range of smart devices without any trouble. The cloud helps allow that extra element of mobility as it can be accessed at any time and place by staff. It also takes a lot less maintenance, so the money and time saved from ditching physical servers can transform many businesses when their resources are allocated elsewhere.

Apps Galore

The market for software in any given industry used to be much more limited with expensive packages dominating the scene. Thanks to the move towards a mobile workforce, fiscally worried business owners can seriously consider the countless cheaper and sometimes free apps that are available now. Everything from finances to project management can be moved to cloud based apps and utilised around the clock, not just during classic 9-5 desktop access. Small businesses benefit the most from this change; by using cheaper, mobile programmes, they have the resources to compete with larger companies and make a name for themselves where ten years ago this would not be possible. A lot of markets are now much more diverse thanks to this.

The world is changing at a rapid pace to keep up with the evolution of technology. There will no doubt be more changes to come, and the workforce is already unrecognisable in some sectors compared to a decade ago. Mobility has brought about some of the biggest shifts in office and working culture, and it’s clear that it will continue doing so for a long time to come.
